Chabeuil Gite Blues: Wednesday, October 15th!

All our words are but crumbs that fall down from the feast of the mind. -Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) [Sand and Foam]

Dear Patrick, Reminder of our upcoming Volunteer Orientation:

As a Food & Beverage volunteer, Editor/Proofreader, Reception and/or Distribution volunteer you are welcome to attend either evening. There is no specific break-out training session offered for Reception, Editors or Distribution volunteers, but break-out sessions for Food & Beverage volunteers will be offered both evenings. No need to attend both evenings!

Date: Tues Oct 14 and Wed Oct 15 Where: Festival House, 1398 Cartwright St. Granville Island. Time: 6:30 PM Doors open for volunteer package pick-up

7:00 PM Introduction/welcome followed by break-out training sessions for volunteer committees/activities. Orientation is an opportunity to hear about the policies, procedures, expectations and benefits for Festival Volunteers, as well as (for Food & Beverage volunteers) important specifics about your role. It is also a great chance to socialize, meet other volunteers and win a fabulous door prize! It is essential for new volunteers to attend!

Karl Ove Knausgaard
And because roles and expectations change every year, we highly recommend that returning volunteers also attend. If you are unable to attend the Orientation, and haven't let us know as yet, please contact us as soon as possible. Many thanks. We look forward to seeing you there! Sincerely, Kathryn
Hi Todd Rum Baba! Congrats indeed! Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore, however? Still running I gather. Off to California on the 27th, after volunteering at VWF, of this month for a couple of weeks of wine tasting and cycling through the vineyards. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Karl Ove Knausgaard’s first novel, Out of the World, was the first debut novel to win the Norwegian Critics’ Prize for Literature, and his second novel, A Time to Every Purpose Under Heaven, was widely acclaimed. A Death in the Family, the first of the My Struggle cycle of novels, received the prestigious Brage Prize. The six novels of the My Struggle cycle can be read independently or as one hugely ambitious project. This breathtaking cycle has been the greatest literary sensation in Norway in decades.

Hi Christina! Congrats indeed! How time flies when you are having nothing but fun! Trust you are well. Chloë celebrated Thanksgiving with Maya this past Sunday, at Lynette's place, here in town. Apparently, all goes exceedingly well on the Sunshine Coast for them. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Herman Koch
Herman Koch is the author of eight novels and three collections of short stories. The Dinner, his sixth novel, has been published in 25 countries and was an international bestseller. His most recent work translated into English is Summer House with Swimming Pool. He lives in Amsterdam.

Up at just after 8:00 am. Still fairly dark at his time so I guess there is little question that we are heading into the Fall! Not sure what forecast holds but I think I might head over to FCCC to use the elliptical. Also have to start making advance preparations for California junket. Need to renew my travel insurance and want to talk to Slammin' Steve at Coastal to see what he thinks about having my front brakes done. On last service he said I should have them replaced at next service.

Sarah Waters is the author of five novels. Tipping the Velvet won the Betty Trask Award, and Affinity won the Somerset Maugham Award and The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. Fingersmith was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize, and won the CWA Historical Dagger Award, as well as three Author of the Year awards.

The Night Watch was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Orange Prize. The Little Stranger was published to rave reviews around the world, was an immediate bestseller in Canada and in the United Kingdom, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Her new novel is The Paying Guests. Waters lives in London.

Hello to our Favourite Portlandians! Trust your trip back east went well, Digitale! Whirlygig is off to Portland tomorrow, Fingare, for Wrightson. Am wondering if you will be able to meet up with him at club, sometime over weekend, to give him six bottles of hootch to mule back for me, Fingare? Not a big deal, as I mentioned, in an earlier message but would be great if it is not too, too much trouble. (Have included him in message, as you can see.)

Really enjoyed the past week with our friends, Claire and Greg from Brisbane. [We stayed with them in 2012, with Flamin' and Sarge. We met on Canal du Niivernais in 2010. Other couple, Elly/Tony, traveling with them stayed here this past May.] Fondestos to you both from Cora Lee. Looking forward to catching up on the 27th. Thanks again, ever so much, for putting us up and putting up with me! Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pics: K/S are visiting from Melbourne. Kathleen was in Library School with Cora Lee. We have stayed with them each of the five times we've been in Oz.

Hi the Vancouvan's, We have had some difficulties adjusting from the marvellous time we had in your fine city to the city of peace an love according to all the shop fronts in Haight and Ashbury. We have done a bike ride over the GG Bridge, travelled the cable car. Eaten at a genuine Diner, the chowder of course and tomorrow we will try out some more elegant location for a meal. We are more convinced than ever that the country side is preferable to the city sights of San Fran. We already miss the delicious sights of Vancouver and its surrounds and opportunities to visit dramatic vistas. We are off to the prison island tomorrow for a look at a possible future behind bars to see if it is a preferable option to freedom and adventure.

We cannot describe your generosity and thoughtfulness whilst we were visiting trouble is of course that nothing can compare. Cheers from the travelling ossies

Hello Golden Gate People! Thanks for all your more than generous and kind words. For our part we thoroughly enjoyed your stay, (Hope it will be the first of many!), and were more than delighted that you found Vancouver so much to your liking. I trust that you are not incarcerated on Alcatraz as we'd become overly despondent knowing that cycling trip in 2016 might not come to fruition! As well, I'm still bemoaning the fact that you couldn't stay another week or so as I've an incredibly long list of "chores" I need Greg to attend to!!!

With respect to your cycling in San Francisco, I'm very much impressed! Bravo indeed! Just wondering if you might be able to suggest how we might be able to do the same when there on November 1st/2nd, weather permitting. Not sure if we can take our bikes on BART but if not we'd drive to some place near Golden Gate and park there. What did you do? Rented bikes, obviously. What is approach like on surface roads before you actually get to bridge deck itself? Did you ride all the way to Sausalito? Any suggestions/information much appreciated.Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

P, Thanks for the invite but it looks like tonight will not work for us. It may be too late on a 'school night' for Jane. I get back from Evergreen about 9:00 and likely that will be too late for Jane. You may find us dropping in if Jane feels like getting out for a walk but I would be surprised. We will find another time soon. Enjoy, G

Hi TC! Understand about school night for Jane but if you want to pop by yourself that would be just fine. Tell her to have a nap while you are playing squash! Cora Lee NEEDS to meet her!!!! You know what Yentas are like!

You will have noted that I sent a message to Michaelo so I assume I/we will hear, one way or another. If things work, fine, but not to worry.

Looks like a bit of a wet day so I'm going to go over to use elliptical, at FCCC, at some point. Have to pop over to see Kathryn at VWF to pick up our volunteer packages. Also have been invited, by virtue of my donations to VWF, (not my startling good looks, it would seem!), to hob knob with Herman Koch, (Author of The Dinner. Very much liked this entertaining, ultimately, disturbing, work.), at a hoity-toity reception put on by the Consul General of the Netherlands, no less, on Wednesday evening next, in Shaughnessy Lexus/Nexus Land, so have to arrange for back-up with Cora Lee as I'll be MIA from bar at Studio 1398 for a few hours! Or days, even!!! Give me a shout, one way or another. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Lodging: Barbara gets back from Europe today with her frail husband.  When it seems proper but soon, I will ask her about staying there.  It would be foolish to rush and ask before she has her breath back. If for whatever reason that doesn't pan out, we'll see if Elise's "maybe" can get fleshed out into two beds.  If neither works out, we'll know within a few days and work on another plan. We will not fail you. Cactus

Hello Reservation Desk, Villa Vicente! As Ragin' Bull is wont to say, "Sometimes wrong but never in doubt!" Appreciate, muchly, your sustained efforts, (needed, it would seem, due to over-booking on some dolt's part), on behalf of the Canuck Freeloaders!

Fondestos to you both from Cora Lee. Looking forward to catching up on the weekend of the 31th, (43rd Anniversary of meeting Coriandre on Halloween, in a pub, in Winnipeg!), and putting a considerable dent in wine stash, should any bottles survive! Thanks again, ever so much, for working on putting us up and putting up with me! We who are prepared to sleep with the Arachnids, salute you! Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Before Thanksgiving dinner with Catherine, just back from France

Dear Compagno Bilbaino! Terrific to hear from you and learn that you are doing so well. Congratulazioni indeed! Let the trikitixaplay as you dance your way to success on The English Test!

Life has been busy here at The Islay Inn. On the travel front we do hope that we will manage to meet up with Claire and Greg, in Europe, probably in 2016, to travel from Devon to somewhere in Brittany, then on to Spain and Portugal, or parts thereof. They are organizing a cycling tour which I am keen to take part in. Cora Lee will drive support vehicle! At any rate, if trip comes together and you are still in Bilbao at the time, it would be grand to see you.

Fondestos from Coriandre and Chloë. All the best. Buona Fortuna and Cheers, Patrizzio! Pics: Your former home town!

October 15...........You did not respond to my last message dated 10-11 :-) . Pat and I have a lot to do, like you said and you are welcome to stay two nights in the guest house and a dinner one night here at our house. We could even have another dinner here the second or first night if things work out and we have time or you could be on your own.

We are also really into Baseball so if the World Series is still on when you are here we will be glued to the TV by 8pm. We have our priorities :-) . So in my last email which I have copied below, you said you would be here late on the 28th. Now you say you will be here early and will be tasting SO dinner that night would work so as long as you are here by 5 in time for cocktails that could work.

If you are here on the 28th at a reasonable time you could stay that night and the 29th in the guest house. I thought you implied you would stay on the 29th and 30th but either two days would be fine. I am sorry but we will be busy so two nights of entertaining works best for us. Please let us know for sure which days work for you and how many people will be staying since we have to get the guest house set up for your stay..........Dave

Hi David! Sorry for the confusion. We will be arriving on the afternoon of the 29th, early enough to be in time for cocktails at 5:00 pm! Stay the night of the 30th as well and then head into San Francisco on the morning of the 31st, if that is still fine. We certainly don't expect you to change your evening plans and please don't worry about dinners either. As you well know there are all sorts of eating options in Healdsburg.
Since we will have our bikes we will certainly be away most of the day on the 30th. What we might do, again if this is fine with you, is come to your place sometime around noon +/-, on the 29th and then go for a ride from there. Again, we want to minimize any interruption to your busy lives and are more than happy to be on our own.

To confirm:  There will be three of us, George, Matthew and I. We will stay two nights, the 29th and the 30th.  Hello to Pat from us both. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!
