Early Edition VWF Interview Blues: Monday, October 20th!

Readers may be divided into four classes: 1. Sponges, who absorb all that they read and return it in nearly the same state, only a little dirtied. 2. Sand-glasses, who retain nothing and are content to get through a book for the sake of getting through the time. 3. Strain-bags, who retain merely the dregs of what they read. 4. Mogul diamonds, equally rare and valuable, who profit by what they read, and enable others to profit by it also. -Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet, critic (1772-1834)

Kate Mosse Citadel

"If you have ever found yourself saying cavalry when you meant calvary or asterix when you meant asterisk, don't let it bother you too much. It proves only one thing: you are human.

We all make such transposition errors from time to time. Most of these errors are ignored in the flow of time, but there are instances when these mispronunciations become standard. The word we know as tusk was originally tux. And it happens in other languages as well. The French fromage (cheese) is an alteration of formage (forming). Spanish palabra (word) was formed from Latin parabola.

This week we'll see five words that have their spellings changed owing to mispronunciation, a process known as metathesis."

Mullion:

noun: A vertical piece of stone, wood, metal, etc., dividing a window or other opening.

Etymology:

From transposition of sounds of Middle English moniel, from Anglo-Norman moynel, from Latin medius (middle). Ultimately from the Indo-European root medhyo- (middle), which is also the source of middle, mean, medium, medal (originally a coin worth a halfpenny), mezzanine, mediocre, Mediterranean, moiety, and Hindi madhya (middle). Earliest documented use: 1556. Words formed by metathesis (a transposition of sounds)

Hi Spinning Woman and Mr Grizzle! Thanks very much for such a wonderful evening. Fabulous food and wine, plus scintillating company, it goes without saying! Hope we'll have a chance to reciprocate sometime after mid-November so will be in touch. Fondestos and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Dear Fantastic 2014 volunteers! We have an event tonight on Granville Island with lots of unsold tickets....If you're interested in seeing "Tim Winton in Conversation with Hal Wake" compliments of the festival, please arrive at the Waterfront Theatre by 7:15/30 to put your name on the Volunteer Comp list....any unsold tickets remaining by the start of the event will be released to volunteers on a first-come first served standby basis. Enjoy! Kathryn

Hi Judith! Quite enjoyed the interview. Thanks! Didn't catch Michelle's last name and can't seem to find her listed on Early Edition website. Not a big deal but if you can pass it along, at some point, that would be appreciated. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Michelle Eliot. She has just tweeted your photo on Twitter so you can pass that along to your compatriots. @CBCEarlyEdition

Many thanks again for doing the interview. Judith            Hi again, Judith!

Thanks for quick reply. I've sent out notice of Ellroy tickets to my book club members and others, (along with snaps taken this morning!), and asked them to spread the word as well. Hope this helps. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Lads et al: Just enjoyed my five minutes of fame as I was interviewed by Michelle Eliot of CBC's Early Edition at 11:00 am this morning at Granville Island, outside Performance Works. I'd been contacted by Judith Walker, VWF Media Relations Manager, on Friday to see if I would be interested. Apparently show wanted something from a long time volunteer. [Just interviewed 10-yr volunteer Patrick Dunn. His behind the scenes stories, tmrw on

Cora Lee was to have been part of interview but she had to bow out as she had an important meeting with Sandra Singh, City Librarian, about Friends of VPL.

I happened to mention Ellroy during interview and afterwards Judith thanked me for doing so. She told me that there were still plenty of tickets available, hence the the notification for any of you who might be interested in attending. I'd dearly like to go to the session but I'm already going to be hob-knobbing with Herman Koch, (Author of The Dinner. Very much liked this entertaining, ultimately, disturbing, work.), at a hoity-toity reception put on by the Consul General of the Netherlands, no less, that evening, in Shaughnessy, so have arranged for back-up for Cora Lee at Studio 1398, bar we look after during Festival, as I'll be MIA for an hour or so, (or days, even!!!), as it is!

If you know of any other Ellroy fans, please spread the word. Thanks and Cheers, Patrizzio!

Pat, I'm reading Perfidia by Ellroy right now. I'm surprised he hasn't been sued for some of comments he makes about Hollywood stars from another era. Ray

Hi Raymond! In fact, I didn't even know that Perfidia was out! Thanks for bringing me up to date. You have probably seen this review but in case you haven't, here it is:

Sorry that I've not been in touch, of late. Again, no excuses, but plenty of reasons! Think I'll blame it on Giorgio and his move to Galiano! Now that the VWF is on will be busy this coming week and then Matt, George and I are off to California on Monday, October 27th. Whirlygig and Carlos the jackal are playing in a doubles tournament in San Francisco on the Halloween weekend. Probably back on 6th or 7th of November.

Will have a chance, while driving, in particular, to catch up on everyone's busy lives. Corinne's parents will be here on October 31st so looking forward to having them back next door. Sarge continues to do well and is now enrolled in the Healthy Heart Program. He is back to "normal" in the sense that he can do, within reason, everything he was doing before he collapsed. His close friend, Wayne Connors, from St John's, arrives tomorrow, for a week or so. Otherwise Sarge may well have joined us on road trip. Big Al wanted to come along but he is very busy with work and rennos on cabin to get away.

Hoping to take in Sebastien De Castell and C.C. Humphries tomorrow afternoon. That evening, after our shift finishes at Studio 1398, we hope to dash next door to the Waterfront Theatre to hear Charles Foran, Karl Ove Knausgaard, and Eimear McBride, moderated by Aislinn Hunter, a local author and friend.

Plan to use the elliptical at FCCC this coming week, in between various sessions and shifts. Trust you and Sylvia are well. Hope we can manage to arrange a get-together, sometime after mid-November, coordinating a gathering when Giggster will be in town. Cheers, Patrizzio!

Hello Patrick, Chloe & Ayn! Thank you for your email and pictures. I only got to read it now, as the last 4 weeks have been crazy busy at work-and I put everything aside. Was working on the additional photography for “50 Shades of Grey”. We just wrapped late Friday night, so now we can breathe again :) I probably only have another week to wrap paperwork up.

After that I look forward to Yoga again, and perhaps a walk in the autumn sunshine. Henning just got back from 5 weeks hunting as well. He and his friends were only successful In the last 24 hours with Moose & Deer. He now is getting settled in again in Abby, and only plans to go back to the boat at the end of November. By the way, this Xmas time I’m only in Europe for 1 week- from Dec 22-Jan1- so if you are in town Lets do a lunch or visit again sometime.
Bug hugs, Laura

Hi Mr. Mehra, I'm a friend of Janet Tomkins and we are planning a trip to India for October 2015. There will be 4 of us, two couples. We would like to spend 3 weeks in the Southern Tip and 3 weeks in the Golden Triangle and Rajasthan. We were think of leaving mid-late October and returning in early December. I understand that hiring a car, driver and guides is the best way to go. We would like to do the usual things like a houseboat in Kerala and some time in Goa at a resort. Some of the former palaces now hotels sound like they would make wonderful accommodation. I've been reading about Nilaya Hermitage in Goa and Samode Haveli in Jaipur.

Also we are open to suggestions about unique accommodation and activities. I guess we are interested in a mid-range holiday not high end. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best Corinne Durston
