Centenary of the Armenian Genocide Blues: Friday, April 24th!

The habit of reading is the only enjoyment in which there is no alloy; it lasts when all other pleasures fade. -Anthony Trollope, novelist (24 Apr 1815-1882)

Two girls show their wrists marked 'AG' for 'Armenian Genocide' to mark the 100th anniversary of the massacre of Armenians in Turkey.
Today marks 100 years since the beginning of the Armenian genocide at the hands of Ottoman Turks in the early years of the First World War. A century later, members of the global Armenian diaspora are taking to social media to share photos and stories of family members who were affected by the genocide. An American-Armenian photographer is also set to release a book of stunning images from Armenian communities in 22 different countries, “to show our survival.”

Hey Dad,  I will have a link and info for you at the beginning of May as our site is being upgraded and the link for the donations page will be changing. Thanks,

Had a very productive day of packing today. Cora Lee finished up most of the cleaning at The Annexe while I attacked the book shelves in our bedroom as well as the more than considerable number of photo albums we have acquired over the last 40 years! Managed to pack all of the latter and only have about half of the shelves on my side of the bed to finish. (Need to return to Cheap Thrills or the liquor store for more boxes as only have large ones left and books are too, too heavy to use these, as you can well imagine.) Self-righteous Cora Lee had completed her side a week or so ago! When she came back to our place we started on the hall closet, packing up most of our winter things along with many coats, hats, etc., we know we will not need.

That done, Emelda managed to fill two medium-sized, large boxes with shoes and boots while I rearranged all of the tubs and boxes we have piled against our bedroom wall so that we could lean our king mattress against them, so as to align/order everything as efficiently as possible. Looks a bit like the Berlin Wall! No time for gym, (Didn't really need to ellipticize as I was "pumping" boxes of books for much of the day!), or a ride. Couldn't really have gone out to cycle anyway as rain was pelting for much of day.

After showering and changing, around 6:30 pm, we enjoyed a delicious meal, (Overlefts of scrumptious zucchini lasagna Mme Coriandre had prepared on Thursday and a mixed green salad I threw together.), washed down with a superb bottle of 2013 Township 7 Sauvignon Blanc, 13%, while we watched a recorded episode of Elementary and then two episodes of Bloodline on Netflix.

To bed at around 11:30 pm to read Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See, (I meant to mention it to you but rum must have clouded my already clouded mind!), the incredible story of a blind French teenager and a young German soldier. The central setting is the walled port city of St-Malo in Brittany. Simply cannot put it down and have read until the wee smalls the last two nights. A must read as far as I'm concerned! Interestingly enough, a number of friends who are travelling in Europe, France in particular, at the moment, will visit Brittany so I am planning to suggest, to them, that they try to pick up a copy of this work. Might be quite interesting to walk the very same streets as the protagonists of this novel. I assume that the town will have been re-built after the almost total destruction it sustained at the end of the war, tellingly and chillingly described in the book, of course.
